Deadly Crash In Sharps Chapel
December 30, 2007
A one-vehicle accident claims the life of a young boy and leaves his mother in critical condition and a brother in serious condition.

The accident took place on Oak Grove Lane at Ott Road in Sharps Chapel on Sunday, December 30, 2007 around 11:19am.
Units from the Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department and Union County Rescue Squad responded to the scene, where Dakota Brummitt, age 7, had been ejected from the vehicle and his mother, April Brummitt, age 30, and brother Johnathan Brummitt, age 9, were trapped in the vehicle.

Rescue workers worked for nearly one hour freeing them from the wrecked car that was wrapped around a tree off the side of the roadway, down an embankment.

April Brummitt and son, Dakota, were transported by Union County EMS to a landing zone and taken to UT Hospital by Lifestar and Wings air ambulances.  Johnathan was pronounced dead on the scene.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.  According to reports from the scene, the vehicle appeared to have lost control on one side of the roadway and veered across to the other side, striking a tree.

At the time of this report, April Brummitt was listed in critical condition and Dakota was listed in serious, but stable condition.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

 

Sharps Chapel Home Destroyed By Fire, Family Gets Out Safely
November 28, 2007
On Wednesday, November 28, 2007, Union County 911 Dispatch Center received a call on a house fire located at 283 Bass Haven Drive off Leadmine Bend Road in Sharps Chapel.  At approximately 5:55am, Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene, and upon arrival, found the two-story home about 50% involved in flames.
Fire units attacked the blaze and were able to save a few personal belongings in a room on the rear portion of the home, but the home itself was destroyed.
Units from Northeast Union and the Rescue Squad were called to assist with the fire.
Chief Upton of Sharps Chapel VFD said the fire started near a closet at the stairwell of the home, according to the homeowner.  Upton said the homeowners all made it out of the home safely, as a smoke alarm did sound.  Upton also said that the cause of the fire was caused by an electrical short.
The home belongs to the Baker family.
SCVFD members on scene included Chief Chris Upton, Asst. Chief Kevin Brantley, Captain Mason Simpson, Firefighters Darrell and Michele Morris, Gordon Sartain and Chuck Nicley responded to the scene along with members of the Northeast Union VFD and Union County Rescue Squad.  Engine 51 and Tankers 52 and 31, as well as Rescue 234 responded to the scene.

Sharps Chapel Home Saved From Fire
November 5, 2007
The Sharps Chapel VFD was dispatched to a structure fire at 691 Sharps Chapel Road on Monday, November 5th around 6:10am.
Firefighter Darrell Morris was first on the scene to find the mobile home full of smoke.
Engine 51 arrived soon after, and Firefighters made an internal attack to find a small fire in a closet where the heating unit is located.  The fire was extinguished, and firefighters ventilated smoke from the home.
Homeowners Vyron and Debra Cook were at home when the fire started, and no injuries were reported.
The fire damage was contained to the closet area, and the home suffered minor smoke damage.
SCVFD Units on scene were:  Chief Chris Upton, Asst. Chief Kevin Brantley, Captain Mason Simpson, Firefighters Darrell & Michelle Morris, Donnie Patterson, Tim Johnson and Brandon Collins.  Engine 51 and Tanker 52 were also on scene.  Northeast Union VFD Chief Gordon Sartain also responded with Engine 31.

Two Suspicious Wild Fires
October 15, 2007
Sharps Chapel VFD was dispatched out to a forest fire on Leadmine Bend Road on Monday, October 15, 2007.  Chief Upton responded with Mason Simpson and Darrell Morris to the estimated 8-acre forest fire.
The fire was knocked down until a Forestry Unit arrived to put in safety lines to contain the blaze.
While on this call, they were dispatched to the 100 block of Walker Road, where another small fire had been set.  Chief Upton said both fires were under investigation.
No injuries or damage was reported.  Fire units kept a close watch on two homes near the blaze.
Other Sharps Chapel VFD members who later responded were:  Michelle Morris, Brandon Smith, Debbie Hammontree, Gordon Sartain.  Rescue 51 & Tanker 52 Responded.

Sharps Chapel Residential Fire Under Investigation
August 29, 2007
Investigators are looking into a residential fire that took place at 546 Ridge Road in Sharps Chapel.
 
Units from the Sharps Chapel and Northeast Union Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to a residential fire with smoke coming from the residence around 8:43pm on Wednesday, August 29, 2007.
According to reports, firefighters arrived on the scene and contained the fire to one end of the home which was unoccupied at the time of the blaze.
Fire units were on the scene for a couple of hours to make sure the fire was out and left.
Within 20 minutes, Union County 911 received a second call and sent firefighters back to the scene.
According to fire units, when they arrived the second time, the fire was on the opposite end of the home that had not previously been on fire.
Chief Upton of the Sharps Chapel VFD said that he was advised the home was fully involved when fire units arrived the second time.
No injuries were reported from the blaze.  Authorities advised the incident was under investigation at the time of this report.

Northeast Union VFD Engine 31 responded with members who assisted.

Fire Destroys Storage Building With Vehicles
August 6, 2007
On Monday, August 6, 2007, Sharps Chapel VFD was dispatched to an out-of-control brush fire on Stiner Road at the far northern end of Sharps Chapel.  While enroute to the call, SCVFD was advised that an outside shed had caught fire.
Upon arrival, the structure was more than 50% involved with flames.  The building and 4 older model vehicles, along with a pile of lumber, was destroyed by the blaze.
Chief Upton responded to the call in Rescue 51 and was almost on scene before being made aware that a structure was involved.  Mason Simpson went after Tanker 52 and Darrell Morris met the Chief at the scene.
The building and contents were a total loss.  The fire had started when wind caught flames where a man was burning out a fence row behind the building.
No injuries were reported, and the firefighters contained and extinguished the blaze.
North East Union VFD units were in route to assist, but were cancelled.

Car VS Power Pole
Monday, July 2, 2007

On Monday, July 2, 2007, Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department Units responded to a one-vehicle accident on Sharps Chapel Road near Rhonda's Deli.

The driver, Jill Gulley, lost control of her vehicle and struck a power pole.

 

She was transported to Claiborne County Hospital by Union County EMS to be checked for minor injuries.

Firefighters Brandon Smith, Mason Simpson and Auxiliary Michelle Morris responded to the scene with Rescue 51.

Electrical Fire
April 12, 2007
On Thursday, April 12th, just before 1:00am, Sharps Chapel VFD Units were dispatched to an electrical fire at 201 Cain Road.
Upon arrival, light smoke was found in the home.  The source was found to be an electrical wire short from the well house wire running into the home.
Firefighters pulled the breaker to the well box and stood by on scene to check and make sure it was safe.
No major damage was reported.
SCVFD Members on scene included Asst. Chief Kevin Brantley, and Firefighters Mason Simpson responding with Engine 51 to the call.

Two Trailers Destroyed By Fire On Easter Sunday
April 8, 2007
Firefighters from the Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department responded to two trailer fires at 151 Homepark Road on Easter Sunday afternoon.  The fires took place around 12:44pm in a small trailer park located behind Rhonda's Deli off Sharps Chapel Road.
As the first units arrived on the scene, the first trailer was fully involved with flames, when then caught the second trailer, located about 15 feet beside it, on fire.
Units from Northeast Union, Maynardville, Paulette VFDs and the Union County Rescue Squad responded to the scene to assist.
According to reports from the scene, the owners of the first trailer, Mary Rose and family, were not home when the fire started, and the owner of the second trailer, Charles Clouse, was at home, but escaped without injury.
Both homes were destroyed by the blaze, but the firefighters saved a third camper trailer and 50-gallon kerosene tank from catching fire.
Chief Chris Upton of the SCVFD stated that he appreciated everyone assisting with this unfortunate holiday fire, and was grateful no major injuries occurred from the blaze.  Chief Upton said the second trailer caught fire because it was so close to the first one.  The exact cause of the first trailer fire was under investigation.  The local Red Cross was called for assistance to help the families involved.

Beech Grove Loop Chimney Fire
April 4, 2007
On Wednesday, April 4th around 6:00pm, Sharps Chapel VFD Units responded to a residential fire call at 338 Beech Grove Loop.
Upon arrival, light smoke was in the living room with a chimney fire.  The fire was extinguished and smoke cleared from the home without any damage.
The homeowner was advised to have the chimney checked before starting another fire.
SCVFD Members on scene included Chief Chris Upton, Asst. Chief Kevin Brantley, Firefighter Tim Johnson, and Juniors Aaron Sharp, Brandon Collins and Adam Brantley.  Engine 51 and Tanker 52 were on scene.  *Northeast Union VFD was in route to assist, but cancelled.

Abandoned Trailer Fire
April 3, 2007
Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to an abandoned trailer fire on Tuesday, April 3rd around 1am.
The trailer, a mobile home, had been left abandoned on Walker Road just off Leadmine Bend Road.  The trailer had been blocking the road for a couple of days.
Upon arrival, the home was fully involved with flames.
SCVFD Members on scene included Asst. Chief Kevin Brantley and Firefighters Mason Simpson and Brandon Smith responded.  Chief Upton arrived later.

Hunter Injured In Shooting Accident In Chuck Swan Wildlife Management Area
March 31, 2007
On Saturday morning, March 31st just after 9am, Union County 911 received a call of a shooting incident in Chuck Swan Management Area in Sharps Chapel.
First Responders from the Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department responded with Union County EMS to the scene.
According to reports, a group of hunters in the Management Area were there for a Turkey Hunt.  One of the men had fired his gun, hitting one of his hunting partners in the head.  According to reports from the scene, some of the shot hit the man in the back of the head.
Rick Dailey, age 47 of Knoxville, was taken to meet LifeStar by Union County EMS, and was then flown to UT Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
The incident was under investigation by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency Officers on the scene.  Daily was in serious, but stable, condition at the time of this report.

Accidental Shooting
January 21, 2007
On Sunday, January 21st, around 2:30pm, Sharps Chapel VFD responded with Union County EMS and Union County Sheriff's Department to a shooting call in the Beech Grove Road area of Sharps Chapel.
Upon arrival, David Roberts, age 54 of Knoxville, was found to have gunshot wounds to both legs after a high powered rifle he had attempted to pick up went off.
Roberts was transported to UT Hospital by Union County EMS.
Sharps Chapel VFD members Kevin Brantley, Trevor Dykes, Brandon Smith, along with Junior Firefighters Justin Bailey responded with Rescue 51 and Squad 55.

Highway 33 Accident
January 21, 2007
On Sunday, January 21st around 1:50pm, Sharps Chapel VFD Units responded with Union County Rescue Squad to a one-vehicle accident on Highway 33 between Sharps Chapel Road and Veterans Memorial Bridge.
The driver, Julius Robinette, age 37 of Maynardville, had lost control of a Chevy Camaro and ran off the roadway, being ejected from the vehicle.
Robinette was transported by Union County EMS to UT Hospital.
Sharps Chapel VFD members Trevor Dykes, Debbie Hammontree, Brandon Smith, Brian Ray, and Junior Firefighters Brandon Collins & Justin Bailey responded with Rescue 51 and Squad 55.

Stiner Road Accident
January 5, 2007

On Friday, January 5th around 9:50pm, Sharps Chapel VFD responded to a one-vehicle accident on Stiner Road near Mell Fall Hollow Road.
The vehicle was off the roadway, down an embankment.
Donald Helton, age 54 of Sharps Chapel, was extricated from the vehicle and flown to UT Hospital by LifeStar.
Sharps Chapel Firefighters Tim Johnson, Debbie Hammontree, and Junior Firefighter Aaron Sharp responded with Rescue 51 and Squad 55.  Union County Rescue Squad and Tennessee Highway Patrol were also on the scene.
